I wanted to do a post on Oprah ever since I started writing this blog. I personally never watched her show but I knew everything about her because she was such a huge icon, even to this day. Oprah has struggled with her weight all her life, it was a constant cycle of gaining then losing then gaining it all back again.
In 1988 Oprah came out on stage with a wheel barrow of fat, 67 pounds of it. She then stated that for 6 weeks she was on an all liquid high protein diet that helped her lose the weight. Of course she gained it all back, and then the next thing was WeightWatchers which she is now a spokesperson for and has lost 42 pounds. A joke that I really like by Kathlene Madigan goes something like, “I heard Oprah has hired a personal chef to cook her healthy meals to help her lose weight. But, she is so rich, why doesn’t she hire someone to smack the food away from her?” I love this joke! I love it because of how true it is, Oprah was and still is constantly in the public eye yet when she spoke about being on the all liquid diet she had to be supervised, when she was on WeightWatchers she needed a buddy, now she has a private chef cooking her healthy meals because… why? She doesn’t know how? She doesn’t have the time to learn? For God’s sake she had people constantly on the show demonstrating how to cook healthy meals, prepare healthy meals, healthy snacks, why does she need someone else to do it for her? Oprah was recently on Dr. Oz and she spoke about how she discovered she was an emotional eater. I personally think Oprah is one of those cases where she wants to lose weight, she has the means, the capability, the desire, but just doesn’t understand food. She talked about how she rides the wave of a craving by acknowledging how she feels in the moment and by concentrating on fixing or dealing with that emotion instead of eating. Unfortunately, this analogy was used by describing how much she wanted a pretzel and how she was out of ‘points’. I honestly believe that Oprah put so much faith in WeightWatchers that she forgot about her all liquid protein diet. Of course she shouldn’t go back to only drinking protein, but I think she was so put off by the diet that she is refusing to look at or consider that maybe WeightWatchers, no matter how many points she is given, still includes carbs. One thing I do agree with Oprah is that people who only need to lose 15 pounds don’t really get it, or the significance of emotion in regards to weight. Oprah says, “a lot of the people I spoke to would recommend that instead of having a bowl of chips on my desk I should have a bowl of almonds, but almonds will get you there too.” Yes, you are right Oprah, but why will almonds get you there too? Because they are filled with carbs. Oprah, try a bowl of flavoured pork rinds!
