Words from the past So my mom rummaged around and found the book that she was given when she became a teenager. Published in 1959, ‘McCalls guide to teenage beauty and glamour’ was given to her by her mom in order for her to follow into teenage hood. It states “the girl who is over weight is always sure to be afflicted with big hips, heavy legs, and an oversized bosom. But, if any of these is you don’t be discouraged by the number of problems you have to work on. Because whence you have solved the basic problem, the others will most likely take care of themselves.” So, interestingly enough the book presents the menu for calorie counters compared to a menu for weight gainers. Breakfast for weight losers consists of; half a grapefruit, two strips of bacon, one slice of toast, and a glass of milk. Breakfast for weigh gainers is suggested as; one cup of grapefruit juice, one fried egg with two strips of bacon, one slice of buttered toast with jam, and a hot chocolate. A lunch for weight losers consists of; an open toasted cheese sandwich, one small apple, and milk. Compared to a lunch for a weight gainer which consists of; a toasted cheese and bacon sandwich with coleslaw, one large apple, and two cookies, and a glass of milk. For dinner the suggested meal for weight losers is; one medium hamburger with no bun, half a small baked potato with butter, 2/3 cup of cabbage salad, 1/2 cup fruit cocktail, and a glass of milk. Compared to the dinner of weight gainers which consists of; a medium hamburger with a bun, a baked potato with sour cream, 1/2 cup of peas, a cup of coleslaw, 2/3 cup of fruit cocktail with 2 cookies and a glass of milk. The idea is that the calorie counters menu for losing weight is about eating 1100 calories a day. So for those who need to gain weight the calories are 2200 calories a day. So what do you think of the difference between the two? So lets take a look at this calorie losers menu because it appears to me, that when I look at the carb content for what is supposed to be the weight losers category it should actually be in the weight gainer category. So if I were to make the weight loser menu for me today I would take from this menu; for breakfast two strips of bacon, for lunch; cheese, for dinner; a hamburger patty with coleslaw. Drinks for me would be water, diet pop, diet iced tea, tea, coffee, wine. They sure had a big thing about milk in the 50’s and the 60’s, I noticed. But if you look at the carb content in these meals, every single one is at least 90 gm’s of carbohydrates for a total of at least 270 gm’s for the day! Which is around the number of grams I started my diet at! But I guess the question is, what are you eating? When I look at the weight gainers category, that is what I was actually really eating before this diet and when I wasn’t thinking about it. Plus I was eating many snacks. I might even say I was eating more than that without even thinking about it. The book suggests that “for the weight loss person there should be no special weird dishes or exotic menus. Instead, it should be based on restraint, bolstered by non fattening snacks before meals if necessary" is all that should be needed. No wonder so many women have struggled with no idea what was going wrong with their diet and their weight, if this is, as the book suggests is “a sure fire way to become the most charming poised and popular girl in your set” like we’re a bunch of dolls.
