Why was Scrooge, Scrooge?
Why overeat? Over eating is a defense. If the environment is uncertain, then overeating is a defense against death. In order to make sure that, in the event there isn't going to be enough today, there will be enough for tomorrow by overeating. There will be enough because you overate the day before and so for today you can do without. It reflects the fact that in our caveman days food was not evenly distributed from season to season. That is why, even when your dog is well fed, your dog keeps eating, until your dog becomes obese. It is thought that your dog will "just know" when to stop eating, but it isn't true, because evolution tells the genetics of your dog that tomorrow there may be a blight or a famine. This is based in your dogs need for survival, and also our survival instinct. So our enjoyment of food is based in the fact that we, historically have had a precarious food environment. Actually, you can see this reality play out in any generation in which people have had to manage themselves based upon the fact that there hasn't been enough. Like for example, anyone who has lived through a depression or a war. It is very hard for people who have lived through such desperate times to realize that they can spend or even eat what they want to eat they actually have accumulated a lot of money in the bank, or that they have enough food because they have a ton of food in their cupboards. It is so ingrained and conditioned that they can loose everything at any moment and that they will not have enough to eat for tomorrow, so they need to continually save or conserve in order to survive. Disordered eating occurs when there is a constant source of abundant food and the need to continue to want food is based on an environment that does not actually exist any longer. The need to survive is based on what is called the reptilian brain, say Dr. Laurie. The reptilian brain is our caveman brain created in our need to survive and, it is driven by anxiety that tells us that we need to be afraid of the future. The evolved brain is based on our need to recognize our surroundings and the fact that we no longer need to be afraid because our environment has changed. We need to use our evolved brain in order to recognize that we live an abundant life in which we can consume all that we need, not only for today but for tomorrow and beyond. This means that in order to stop eating we need to recognize that we have enough, and have had enough for today, because there is actually a full fridge and a full cupboard worth of food. So take a look in your cupboard and your fridge and see how much food you actually have accumulated (based on carbohydrates) and you will be able to recognize using your evolved brain that you do not have to overeat today, because you have enough for days to come.
